What is Towny Advanced?

Towny Advanced builds an entire society layer on top of Minecraft. Players found towns, claim land by the chunk, invite residents, set taxes and permissions, and group towns into nations with capitals, allies and enemies. It handles plot types (shops, embassies, farms), town ranks, optional war events, and protects unclaimed wilderness. Land protection is a natural consequence of the town system rather than a separate claim tool, and it integrates with an economy through Vault so taxes, town upkeep and land purchases use real currency. It is the defining plugin for towns-and-nations gameplay.

Who it's for: Servers built around community, politics and territory — towny/earth servers, nation-war communities, and survival servers wanting structured player settlements with economy and governance. It is built and maintained by LlmDl and sits in the protection category.

How to install Towny Advanced

Towny Advanced runs on Bukkit, Spigot or Paper servers. LlmDl actively maintains Towny for current Spigot/Paper versions with frequent releases.

  1. 1Stop your server, or have it ready to restart. Always back up your world and plugins folder before adding a new plugin.
  2. 2Download TownyAdvanced.jar (a build matching your server version) and place it in your server's /plugins folder.
  3. 3Towny Advanced requires Vault — install that plugin first or Towny Advanced will not start.
  4. 4Start the server fully. Towny Advanced generates its configuration files on first launch — stop the server, edit them to taste, then start again.
  5. 5Confirm it loaded by checking the console for Towny Advanced on startup, or by running one of its commands in-game.

Note: Drop Towny into /plugins; install Vault and an economy plugin so taxes, upkeep and land costs work (Towny can run without an economy but loses much of its depth). It generates extensive config and a per-world setting controlling where towns may be founded. Many servers add companion add-ons (Towny Chat, Flags) for extra features.

Towny Advanced FAQ

How does a player start a town?

They run /town new <name> where they want the town founded, which claims the starting chunk and makes them mayor. From there they expand territory with /town claim, invite residents with /town invite, and manage taxes, ranks and plots. Founding a town usually has an economy cost.

Do I need an economy plugin for Towny?

Towny runs without one, but most of its systems — town founding costs, daily upkeep, taxes, plot prices, nation costs — depend on currency. Install Vault and an economy plugin (EssentialsX or similar) to get the full towns-and-nations experience the plugin is designed around.

What is the difference between a town and a nation?

A town is a settlement of residents on claimed land with one mayor. A nation is a group of towns under a capital, enabling alliances, enemies, larger-scale politics and (optionally) war. Towns are the building block; nations are the higher tier players form once they have established towns.

How does land protection work in Towny?

Claimed town chunks are protected so only residents with the right town permissions can build or interact there, while unclaimed wilderness can be configured for its own rules. Protection is a built-in result of claiming land for your town, so you do not need a separate claim plugin alongside it.

Can towns go to war?

Yes, optionally. Towny supports war events between nations where enemies can attack and capture, governed by configurable rules, and many servers run scheduled wars. If you prefer a peaceful server you can leave war disabled and use Towny purely for towns, land and economy.
